Meeting with a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Company

I met with a GIS company yesterday and they’re doing all this really cool stuff. If you look at Google Maps right now over the Philippines, there’s barely enough data there. The guys I met had EVERYTHING. Geographic features, road networks, points of interests, business establishments.

They’ve worked with companies like ABS-CBN to show flooding areas, the Philippine National Red Cross to put on a map evacuation centers vs drop off points vs warehouses. They’ve even worked with a town mayor to identify constituents, supporters, voting population, barangay leaders and such. Finally, a politician doing analytics!

Maybe a presidential aspirant and his party would be willing to contract my company to do election analytics (which is highly regarded in the US) for about 200 million pesos. I could only dream.

What’s even more interesting is that they’re coming out with a GPS device by the end of this year containing everything. It will speak to you just like any GPS device out there on the market and will retail for about PHP 13,000. Neat stuff.

One last thing I learned from our meeting yesterday was how Dagupan was flooded. Apparently, there are a bunch of damns on the same river flowing to Dagupan. Dagupan is also an area filled with waterways all over. Dams overflowed leading to all waterways and their tributaries inside Dagupan to overflow.

I’ve got a few ideas of my own to deal with it.

1. Trim the number of buses by 25-30%.
2. Implement a system like Singapore where cars are charged higher if they want to enter an area.
3. Kick off cars that are over 10 years old.
4. Put a higher tax rate on car ownership.

The money can then be used to improve public transportation such as building more MRT & LRT lines.

Amateur headhunters have shitty English

The problem with the world today is that anyone can start one of these headhunting companies and tell their clients they can scour the Philippines simply by using social networks like LinkedIn. One guy thinks he can change the scene and make money by hiring amateurs with bad spelling and netiquette.

Digging up my email I found this one dated Sept. 25 from one of these companies. I don’t care about companies picking up amateurs but come on! Just look at that horrible English! And she was telling me she was hiring me for some big company to do pre-sales work. Give me a break.

About six months ago, a friend who was working closely along side adobe’s flash application development team told me that they received a prototype of Flash for iPhone. The prototype allowed the iPhone to have less than half an hour of battery life using flash. They then sent the prototype to apple and suggested incorporating this prototype iPhone flash into the iPhone OS in the next update.

Apparently apple sent this letter back thanking them for being interested in developing a working version of flash for the iphone but because the prototype is so processor intensive, and awful for battery life, they would not include it with their OS because it is just not good enough. They suggested using the gpu instead of the processor to render flash. Then they suggested building a seperate app for flash and web browsing because there was no way apple could endorse flash integration on the iphone in its current state.

Adobe apparently didn’t want to release the app under their name either and it never showed up in the app store.

A long story in short: Adobe sucks at programming, then apple told them they sucked at programming. If they want to release that shit under the name adobe so be it, but it sure isn’t going to be endorsed by Apple.

That was the last they saw of that prototype.

Rethinking How To Buy Shoes

The problem with wearing leather shoes all the time is that you annually buy a new pair because the soles get damaged. This is especially true for rubber soles that thin and can’t be resoled.

An average person would spend between 4-8k each year on a relatively ‘ok’ pair of shoes that will last approximately 1 to 1.5 years depending on your frequency of use. In my case, one pair only lasts about a year.

So if shoes costs 4-8k each year, I’m thinking of buying a a big brand shoe from the likes of Hugo Boss and Bally because they have been known to last a lifetime - they just need to be resoled from time to time.

The problem is plunking down an upwards of 20k initially but I believe it is a good investment. It will last 10-15 years (maybe even more) and not to mention the style will always be classic.
